This week I talked to Caryn Bellew, Massage Therapist, Reiki Practitioner and Owner of Bellas Bodyworks in Weymouth. If you experience physical or emotional pain or distress, read the interview below and learn more about how Caryn can help.

HSS: CARYN, WHAT DO YOU DO?

I help people feel good! Using healing modalities like massage, polarity, Reiki or a combination of the three, I help my clients alleviate physical and emotional pain.

HSS: WHAT DO PEOPLE USUALLY COME IN EXPERIENCING? WHAT AILMENTS BRING THEM TO YOU?

Typically clients see me due to physical pain. Back, hip, shoulder and neck pain are most prominent. Once we dig deeper clients often realize the physical pain is brought on by emotional pain that hasn’t yet been worked through or healed.

Also, people come in because they are stuck. They are at a crossroads in their life – personally or professionally – and know they want to do something. Yet they aren’t sure exactly what to do. Energy work gives them a new perspective and a new way of thinking about a next step.

HSS: CARYN, WHO IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?

Most of my clients are familiar with energy work and how it helps alleviate physical and emotional pain and stress. I enjoy working with women who are taking care of everyone else and need help taking care of themselves. You can’t be effective when your own cup is empty. Lack of self-care often breeds anger and resentment. My work keeps women feeling good about themselves so they can successfully perform their role as caregiver. On a large scale, if you experience physical pain, I can help.

HSS: MASSAGE, REIKI AND POLARITY – HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH MODALITY TO USE?

I use a lot of intuition with my work. I can look at someone and determine where and what they need to balance their energy and clear any blockages. My experience combined with my knowledge and education allows me to identify the best modality at the time. Sometimes I use a combination.

HSS: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH YOU? WHAT DO PEOPLE TELL YOU AFTER A SESSION WITH YOU?

Recently a client emailed me to tell me I helped her happy shine through. I love that!

I’ve worked with clients who have limited range of motion when we start. After one or more sessions these same people increase range of motion, sometimes to 90% or 100%.

In general my clients tell me they feel happy, lighter, more focused and motivated. That they’ve been able to get unstuck and move out of a rut they’ve been in. They can move forward to a brighter future.

Finally, my clients feel better physically. When you feel better physically, you feel better emotionally and in general your health improves.

HSS: WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THIS LINE OF WORK? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

Honestly, I had no intention of doing this type of work. I worked as a kitchen and bath designer, a very stressful career. I kept hearing messages guiding me towards massage therapy.  I didn’t want to touch naked people!

Unknowingly, I had been offering Reiki to friends and family. Once I learned it was in fact Reiki, I got certified as a practitioner. Then I found SpatTech in Plymouth – a massage therapy and energy work school. Because of their well-rounded curriculum, I enrolled. I decided that I wanted to start my own business, leave the stressful work world behind and offer Reiki and healing modalities to the world. With the support of my husband and family I did that. I started Bellas Bodywork to help people feel better.

HSS: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE THREE MODALITIES YOU OFFER – POLARITY, MASSAGE, REIKI?

  • Massage. Your body is achy and needs to feel better. Muscles are tight or you need general relaxation. A session lasts about 60 minutes, after which your muscles relax and you feel good.
  • Reiki. Reiki is a hands on, calming, soothing energy modality that unsticks energy and helps energy flow. Reiki is very relaxing and a session lasts about 30 – 45 minutes. Reiki puts you in somewhat of a meditative state. Did I mention that its very relaxing?
  • Polarity is Reiki on steroids. I use it when people are really stuck (think anger, which often results in chronic headaches/migraines or digestive issues) and can’t quite work through it. Polarity helps balance and clear that stuck energy in a more intense way

HSS: WHAT ARE YOUR HEALTHY LIVING HABITS, DO YOU PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH?

Not as much as I should! Once or twice per month I get an energy session – massage or a combination of energy work. I make every effort to meditate daily for 15 – 20 minutes.

I believe that if you take time for yourself you’ll have more energy and mental capacity for the people around you. I take time for myself daily, and I’m much nicer and more helpful to everyone around me. Without it I become angry and resentful. We are all just as important as the people we care for.

HSS: WHAT ARE TRENDS/CHANGES IN THE FUTURE OF HEALTH/WELLNESS INDUSTRY THAT YOU SEE AND HOW WILL THAT AFFECT YOUR CLIENTS/BUSINESS?

Hoping to see more preventative care. A trend  I’m seeing – people are looking for other ways to get well other than doctors, surgery and medication. I’m seeing more people coming in with ailments that traditional medicine isn’t helping. They are curious about the power of thoughts and emotions in healing the physical pain.

I’m also seeing an increased awareness of the power of Reiki. People recognize it more and are asking for it. It’s becoming more accepted as a healing tool. I consider Reiki the gateway to a more spiritual way of living and in essence a healthy way of living. It’s the first step to holistic world. People are asking for it first, then getting curious about other modalities.

HSS: WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?

Computer stuff! I love video games and spending time online.

I also love walks near the ocean/outside.

(Note from Stacey:  Sounds like a good yin/yang!)

HSS: ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU OR YOUR WORK?

That people do not have to suffer in pain. Even if they don’t come to me, see a practitioner who can help. Try different modalities to determine which one is a good fit for you.

The bottom line: No one needs to suffer. Help is available.
